Packed with lots of examples & detailed explanations, the book is not hard khổng lồ read & understand at all (although I have sầu to lớn say I bởi vì not - will not - understvà fully the political & social aspect of this book).
I give this book 4 stars because of the following points:1. Content (2/2.5)- Precision of information (1/1): This book is written from the point of view of a Japanese about Japan, with much depth of information. Also, the author Fukuzawa refers to lớn a lot of historical and social facts relating to Western countries which, after being verified by my research, prove sầu khổng lồ be precise. I particularly love the preface, written by a Vietnamese author, that refers to Vietnamese history and triggers me to find out how it differs from the Japanese one.
- Applicability/usefulness (1/1): Although I cannot apply this knowledge in my field of study/work, I still can explain some visible facts using the book"s analysis. For example, from the author"s description of the power imbalance in Japan, I can deduce why Japanese people today are both hard-working và frugal (sometimes lớn the extreme when compared to lớn other countries).
What I also love sầu about this book is that Fukuzawa also mentions many other philosophies và analyze them thoroughly. This teaches me how to approach a problem size many perspectives. - Newness of information (0/0.5): The author spends a majority of his book talking about historical facts in his time, so needless khổng lồ say, the information is not up-to-date. I sincerely wish someone in this modern world can write a book similar to lớn his, but use a modern approach.
2. Readability (2/2.5)- Easy language (1/1): This book is very easy to read or skyên, or perhaps I read the Vietnamese version.
- Straight-to-the-point (ness) (0.5/1): Sometimes, I can quickly understvà the author"s point by reading a few lines. But other times, I have a hard time following his point, because he uses too many irrelevant examples. For me, examples are both his strength và weakness. On one hvà, examples lessen the difficulty of this book. On the other hand, Fukuzawa uses examples that bear little resemblance lớn the point he"s trying khổng lồ demonstrate (I would say some of them are quite funny but put in the context of a book like this, they are not functioning well)
- Attraction (0.5/0.5): The combination of realistic example và (often) emotional expression makes this book quite delightful to read. Still, if we cut down on irrelevant examples and replace them with more up-to-date ones, I would definitely give sầu attraction full point.
*Personal thought:I think this book is a comprehensive sầu read because it mixes both theoretical discussions (terms, definitions) và exemplary historical facts. For me, it widens my history knowledge, especially when it comes to understanding the behaviors of Japanese people. ...more

Brilliant, both as an intricate work of history & political philosophy, but also as a primary source for Japanese intellectual history in the 19th century. Fukuzawa has a particular gift for illustrating abstract theory with analogy.
